Le Parc Lumière
Le Parc Lumière is the first exhibition in a Swiss museum to be devoted to the Argentine artist Julio Le Parc.
Born in Mendoza, Argentina, in 1928, Le Parc moved to Buenos Aires in 1942, where he began his education as an artist. After studying in Argentina, he moved to Paris in 1958, where he lives and works today. In 1960 he co-founded with other young artists, including François Morellet, the artists’ group GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel). The group published a variety of artistic and political manifestos. There were also group exhibitions in Paris and in New York in 1962. During this period Le Parc was working intensely with light. By 1960 he was producing his first light works and mobiles, and he continued to develop them in the years that followed. In 1966 he was awarded the painting prize at the Venice Biennial. That same year he had his first solo exhibitions: at Howard Wise in New York and at Denise René in Paris.
The exhibition Le Parc Lumière was organized in close collaboration with the artist. It presents more than forty works on the theme of light and movement, most from the 1960s, including a reconstruction of a labyrinth from 1963.
