Atelier van Lieshout

Daros Exhibitions:
Concept and Design of the Entrance

"Atelier van Lieshout does not distinguish between Art, Design, Architecture and Life. In this particular case I felt the urge to do more; I didn't feel comfortable about simply putting up a reception desk and a seating area. For me an artwork typically communicates many layers of meaning. Some of them are on the surface and can be read easily. Others can be read by professionals or people who are sensitive to certain aspects of the work. Some of the layers are only known to the artist. The most interesting parts will always remain undiscovered."

About Atelier van Lieshout
In 1995 Joep van Lieshout founded Atelier van Lieshout (AVL). The name emphasizes that the artworks are produced by a close team rather than a single creative mind. In the meantime AVL has developed into a flourishing company with approximately 25 employees. Most of the artworks are practical and of a simple, but sturdy nature. They vary from polyester furniture, bathrooms and mobile living units to complete architectural refurbishing. One of the many applications that have become AVL’s trade-mark are the fiberglass constructions in bright, conspicuous colors such as red, yellow and orange. Well-known examples are the large, mobile living units such as the Mobile Home for Kröller–Müller Museum, Otterlo.
Over the past few years the focus has shifted from standardized furniture made to order, to artworks that can be used to live a self-sufficient and independent life. Recent plans to build an actual town, AVL-Ville, are being realized at the moment. AVL-Ville is a free state that has all the facilities that are necessary for man to live and work in. For example, a power plant, working and living units, agricultural facilities, and artworks such as a Canteen, an Emergency Hospital, and a Workshop for Weapons and Bombs.
